Bernard J. RENZELMANN immigrated on 1 January 1851 to N. Y; learned the carpenter trade in Buffalo, N.Y.1 He was a a carpenter and joiner in 1858 at Sheboygan, Wis. He began military service on 21 August 1862 at Sheboygan, Wis, assigned [as Barnard Renzelmann] to company E, 27th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment, September 17, 1862. Seven companies rendevous at Camp Sigel, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Col. Conrad Krez of Sheboygan, Wisconsin commanding. Mustered in United States Service on March 7, 1863. Entrained at Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Columbus Kentucky, March 16, 1863. Muster roll records indicate that he was present with company E, September to February 28, 1863 for Columbus, Kentucky. In March and April 1863, soldier was absent (sick at Madison and Sheboygan Wisconsin from March 30, 1863). During May and June, soldier was present. In the later part of May 1863, moved down the Mississippi River and occupied position at Snyder's Bluff during the siege of Vicksburg. After capitulation, moved to Helena, Arkansas. Left Helena with General Steel's forces. Moved up the White River until August 13, 1863. During July and August, detached from service as hospital nurse, Devil's Bluff, Arkansas. Encamped at Devil's Bluff Arkansas from August 24, 1863 until March 23, 1864.2 He ended military service on 24 August 1864 at Sheboygan, Wis. As of March 1880, Bernard J. RENZELMANN was elected Justice of the Peace for fifth ward at Sheboygan, Wis. As of 2 July 1890, Bernard J. RENZELMANN was a Civil War pensioner after receiving Pension Declaration certificate at Sheboygan, Wis.
