Francis Nurse

b. 18 January 1618, d. 22 November 1695
Francis Nurse b. On 18 January 1618 at Wenhaston, Suffolk County, England, is described as a once obscure artisan who in 1678 became a substantial figure in Salem Village when he purchased on credit a 300 acre farm near the Ipswich road. The prosperity of this farm allowed payment of its mortgage on time; similarly all eight sons and sons-in-law settling nearby the Nurse farm also enjoyed financial success. In this decade, Francis also was involved in a protracted dispute with Nathaniel Putnam over a land boundary. His success in his farming venture and apparent financial alliance with the more commercial Salem Town as opposed to the less successful and agrarian Salem Village may have led his wife to become the innocent victim in the witchcraft accusations which stemmed from members of the Putnam family and their associates. Francis also was an opponent of Salem Village minister, the Reverend Samuel Parris, whose sermons may have focused social anxieties into an anti-Satanic movement. The introduction of supernatural forces is argued to have been the response of a downwardly mobile social group (agrarian based on less productive land far from the center and commercial prosperity of Salem Town) against those who were otherwise upwardly mobile (due to commercial interests as well as owning more productive farm land close to the center of Salem Town, which provided the major marketplace for sale of its products), in an era in which the participants had little understanding of the stress on social and religious values due to rapid economic change over which they had no control.
